Slow Fish Introduction
Slow Fish was initiated in Genova, Italy in 2013, which was inspired by Slow Food. As the most severe harms to the ocean comes from the consumers' ignorance about seafood, it is important to learn the stories behind fish, the fishing methods and how to consume fish the right way before tasting.
Slow Food Community has dedicated to the "Sustainable Fishing" field for many years. The concept has also been accepted by "Slow Fish Fair and Development Program" in the biennale held in Genova, Italy to raise awareness of seafood lovers and to support Responsible Handmade-tool Fishing Community. Meanwhile, members of the network also work on organizing local events around the world, with the 3 core concepts "supreme quality," "clean" and "fair" as the central ideas of Slow Fish.
About Miaoli Slow Fish
Miaoli County is located on the coast, which is abounded with great fishing conditions and natural resources. To uphold the spirit of Slow Fish: "To know and understand fish, to eat locally and seasonally, to be able to tell stories of fish and to learn how to slow fish consumption," Miaoli County Government started to connect the 4 townships on the Miaoli coastline (which are Zhunan, Houlong, Tongxiao and Yuanli) since 2019 to promote the Miaoli Slow Fish brand and to build Miaoli County as an International City of Slow Fish in Taiwan.
By promoting 5 concepts including Blue Ocean, Blue Learning, Traditional Fishing, Blue Products and Blue Tourism, the concepts of knowing the fish and co-living with the ocean can be built up while more investments can be made in ocean education to train more talents in ocean resources field. All these efforts can drive local fishing and sightseeing to grow, promote "sustainable" development along the coastline, as well as bring people from all over the world to come to meet the coastline of Miaoli Slow Fish to enjoy the beautiful life between mountain and sea.
International Recognitions
In 2020, Miaoli County Government was recognized and certified for "Slow Fish Miaoli" by Slow Food International to become a formal member of the institution. The government will continue promoting Slow Fish in the 4 seaside townships, Zhunan, Houlong, Tongxiao and Yuanli on the Miaoli coastline while combining with two slow cities Sanyi and Nanzhuang to create Big Slow City brand that upholds the concept of living a beautiful life between mountain and sea.
